The next generation after Joshua and the older generation start out by following what God had commanded them, fighting and driving out some of the people in the remaining land. And yet, they drift away from God’s command to not associate with these nations, and instead, become neighbors living amongst them, even turning to serve their gods. Yet, after God’s rebuke, the people of Israel do not change from their ways; God follows through with His warnings and allows their enemies to rise against them. God has compassion on the Israelites and sends judges to save them from these enemies, but Israel continues to reject God.
