Women's Role in the Home

Titus 2:3-5 - Women's Role in the Home [Part 5]

Summary:

Today's sermon covers how women, both older and young, ought to conduct themselves in light of the "sound doctrine" Paul writes about in Titus 2:1, which is in contrast to the conduct that false teachers (at the end of Titus 1) preach and practice.  Paul specifically points out the attitudes and duties for women that allow them to "deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age." (Titus 2:12).

In this week's section we covered: who are the older vs. young women, the characteristics of the godly older woman, and the first of several character traits of the godly young woman.

Titus 2:3-5

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

Genesis 2:24 - Women's Role in the Home [Part 4]

Summary:

Today's sermon begins by clarifying three types of oneness discussed last week with respect to the meaning of one flesh in Genesis 2:24.  Then, four lessons from Genesis 2:15-24 are given about the role of women in the home (specifically toward her husband in marriage):

  1. Eve is the pattern for all wives.
  2. Eve is Adam's equal in worth and value as a fellow human being.
  3. Eve is Adam's companion.
  4. Eve is Adam's helper.

Genesis 2:24

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

Genesis 2:24 - Women's Role in the Home [Part 3]

Summary:

Today's sermon touches on the last two aspects of the universal principle of marriage (point 7 in the exposition of Gen. 2:15-24): the family unit (one left behind and one newly formed), and the meaning of one flesh.

Genesis 2:24

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

Genesis 2:21-24 - Women's Role in the Home [Part 2]

Summary:

Today's sermon develops points five through seven of the exposition of Genesis 2:15-24: 5) the formation of Eve, 6) the recognition (of Eve by Adam), and 7) the universal principle of marriage.

Genesis 2:21-24

So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said,“This is now bone of my bones,And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman,Because she was taken out of Man.”For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

Genesis 2:15-20 - Women's Role in the Home [Part 1]

The secular worldview besets the church with an unbiblical view of womanhood. But what is God's perspective of the purpose of woman, especially regarding her home-life (i.e., her marriage and family)? In this series, we examine two passages (Genesis 2:15-24 and Titus 2:3-5) to understand God's design for women. This sermon is the first installment in this series and is an exposition of Genesis 2:15-20.

Summary:
- Background of this series was started based on a question from a couple within the church.
- Framing of question is important - not whether the Bible permits or prohibits a woman from working, but what is God's purpose for a woman in general, and what is God's purpose for a woman in regards to her marriage and family
- Starting with Genesis 2:15-24, we looked at the 1) setting, 2) command. 3) plan and 4) naming of animals, for Adam's responsibilities in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 2:15-20:

Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.
