After God rejected Saul as the king, He made known to Samuel that He would show him the new Israelite to be anointed as king, a son among those of Jesse’s sons. But when Samuel went to see who God had chosen, he learned from God that God sees not as man sees but instead looks at the heart - this is how David, the youngest son, was to be anointed according to God’s plan. The Spirit of the Lord was with David from thenceforward, and even Saul and those in his court are witness to this through the sovereign working of God, when David comes to play the harp for the troubled king.
